Is Orthodontic Treatment Still an Option if You Have Dental Implants?

Orthodontic treatment isn’t just for children; it can also help adults straighten their teeth and correct their bite issues. But what if you have lost one or more natural teeth and replaced them with dental implants? Will you still be able to undergo the orthodontic process? Here’s what people with dental implants need to know before pursuing straighter smiles.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the only type of tooth replacement that is surgically placed in your jaw. The bond between the jawbone and the dental implant post is highly beneficial for a number of reasons. It helps keep your replacement teeth stable and gives them chewing power that’s almost on par with that of your natural teeth. On top of that, dental implants can help improve your confidence thanks to their natural appearance.

Orthodontic Treatment and Dental Implants

Dental implants will not disqualify you from having orthodontic work done. There are many patients with dental implants who have been able to achieve better-aligned smiles with the right kind of orthodontic treatment.

Keep in mind, though, that orthodontic work will not affect the position of your dental implants. While natural teeth stay attached to the jaw via connective tissues, dental implants fuse with the bone itself. Consequently, dental implants cannot be moved the way natural teeth can.

If you have yet to have dental implants placed, you may want to put off the procedure until after you have completed any orthodontic work that you might need; this can make things significantly easier. Of course, every patient has different circumstances to consider. Always talk to your dentist first to see what they recommend when it comes to rebuilding and straightening your smile.

Why Have Orthodontic Treatment Done as an Adult?

Whether you have dental implants or not, it’s important not to underestimate the potential benefits of an adult orthodontic treatment. Naturally, a straighter smile can be valuable at job interviews or in any other situation where you want to make the best possible first impression. But enhancing your appearance isn’t the only benefit that can make the orthodontic process worthwhile.

Straighter teeth tend to have a lower risk of cavities. This is because it’s much easier to clean them properly, particularly when it comes to flossing the spaces between them. On top of that, straighter teeth don’t wear down as quickly as crooked ones since they do a better job of making sure the forces of the bite are properly balanced.

If you have dental implants, you don’t have to let that stop you from reaping the benefits of straighter teeth. Don’t be afraid to ask your dentist if you may be a candidate for clear aligners or another orthodontic treatment.
